Candle Care 101

You find the perfect candle, take it home, light it up and enjoy the beautiful ambience, admire the warm glow of the flickering flame, take in the fragrance and relax.  Then, after a few days (or God forbid, hours), the ambience turns ugly. The flame wax isn't melting evenly, leaving walls of wax on the sides, you hear  wierd sounds coming from the wick, half your jar is turning black from soot, and smoke is rising into the air.

Some of this may be due to the quality of the candle, of course, but there are ways to properly care for your candle to get the longest life out of it.

1. Trim the wick: Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each use with scissors, nail clippers, or a Marmot Wick Trimmer. Seriously, don't use toe nail clippers- that's gross.  Trimming helps the candle burn more evenly and cleanly.

2. Don't burn for too long: Don't burn a candle for more than four hours at a time. Why would you anyway? What the heck are you doing with your time??

3. Extinguish with a snuffer:  not talkin dirty here!!   A candle snuffer gently extinguishes the flame with out harming the wick...which helps to  prevent the wick from smoldering...which can cause smoke and wax to spill...which ruins your candle...which defeats the whole purpose of the candle!  Check out our Marmot Candle Snuffers in our store!

4. Keep away from draft areas - even a small, unseen draft can cause huge flickering flames. Instead, find a draft free location away from windows, vents, and cracks in your walls.

5Keep it away from children and pets: this is such a DUH statement, but once my cat, Louise, jumped up one the kitchen counter out of curiosity and knocked a candle to the floor. Wax flew, she flew - not to mention all the wax on her tail!! And, don't even get me started on children.

6. Store Properly: Store the candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Keep the lid on, or a dust cover, if there is no lid.  Yiu can find a variety of cute Marmot Dust Covers in our store
